What does the rest of 2017 look like for you?

Oh man, September? Really? What happened to July and August? Am I right?

I've had this feeling before. Where I didn't properly plan my business activities and, as a result, got carried away reacting to inquiries and requests. I ended up spinning.

I've been really busy but I can't tell you exactly what I accomplished.

I can't easily point to the progress I've made on the goals I set out to achieve at the beginning of the year (which makes this systems nerd a teeny tiny bit uncomfortable. #understatement)

Now, we're just wrapping up summer here in Canada and summer has always been challenging for me when it comes to proactive and productive work.

I tend to do what needs to be done so that I can be out ENJOYING.

And I love that I've created a business and life that allows me to do that.

HOWEVER. And this is a big, huge, fat however.

I prefer to plan for seasons of reduced productivity rather than have seasons happen to me.

I didn't do that this year - I didn't plan for downtime. I didn't determine my top priorities before going into a season that can easily take me off track and now I'm starting Q4 a little like a deer in headlights.

SO.. if you're feeling at all like I am. Like, you're ready to get back at it and you want to take the rest of 2017 by storm - I have a few thoughts for you.

1. Don't beat yourself up

First of all, I am an organised, proactive, planner who uses systems like a crazy person to maximize revenue and minimise effort on things I don't love. And even I end up in this situation sometimes.

So, my first piece of advice is not to dwell in the space of overwhelm.

Acknowledge that you got carried away by life or didn't plan strategically and that's no problem, but you're ready to shift back into strategic business mode.

Use the energy of overwhelm to take action.

 

2. Don't coast the rest of the year just because you've gotten off track

It's easy to just feel like the year is a write off if you haven't stuck to your plan, but that just doesn't make sense. It's like eating junk food for an entire day just because you had a donut for breakfast. There's no reason not to recommit to your goals right now.

Take a look at the goals you set out at the beginning of 2017 and revise them based on where you are.

If you didn't set goals, no problem. Better late than never. Figure out what the top three things you want to accomplish this year are and break them into bite size pieces.

What needs to happen today, this week, this month, next month, and the following month to make it happen?

 

3. Start thinking about 2018 now

Time is just going to keep going by and it's up to us to fill our time in a way that feels good and balances joy in the moment with alignment with our future goals.

And that is tough! This summer I definitely prioritised the NOW and that's ok for a short time. But, now I've switched my thinking to how I can plan 2018 better. How I can use systems not only to scale and grow, but to feel more space in my days for creativity, innovation, and joy.

Start to think about what you REALLY want from 2018 and how you can grow in a way that feels proactive instead of reactive.
